GSM Article
Recently, we have been given the opportunity to take an additional step in the GSM soccer ministry. It’s been a dream since 2005 to provide a home, school and a place where we could provide a fully holistic approach to many of our players' lives who are located throughout Guatemala City. Our dream is to educate them, teach them about Christ through a fully devoted, well staffed mentoring program that will provide a great developmental program while using soccer as a means to this end.
We believe that this is an important step in changing many of the lives of His children in our programs. It will allow for us to be even more involved in their lives while showing the love of Christ and discipling them in the word of God. Also, providing a sound Christian education and Biblical principles for them that will break the cycle of poverty they live in. Our hope is to provide a way for these players to one day become people God can use for His kingdom.
For some time we have envisioned a facility where we would, one day, not only continue to train players in soccer, but expand the level of influence into their education as well. This dream is something that we believed God would guide the ministry to down the road. It seems that ‘some day’ might just be happening sooner than we thought - the opportunity could be starting now.
We have had a person offer to sell, or rent, a school to GSM. This school is located in the community of Canalitos and near many of our existing programs. There is also the opportunity to develop land nearby three soccer fields. This site is the host for one of the current youth soccer academy programs, as well. We are asking for God’s wisdom, timing, and provision for the upcoming steps to bring this vision into a reality.
The idea of having a location where youth could be trained in high level soccer, receive a solid Christian education, and be available everyday of the week for discipleship is thrilling! Through our past and present experience working with youth in rough living areas and conditions we have seen the difficulty of having life long change without having major amounts of time with these children. The best way to teach and impact kids is to be with them more than twice weekly!
Along with this comes a lot of praying, planning, developing, and implementing of the services that we would need to provide and knowing the appropriate time to begin. Our pray for now is, “Lord continue to lead and provide the funding and the right plan with those educators, coaches and administrators to see hearts change in the lives of the players you are holding in the Palms of your hands.”
We are excited to see God make His next move.
