“Cleats for a Cause”
by Anna Weldon, Women’s Team Player at Erskine College

As part of the ‘Students In Free Enterprise’ or SIFE team at Erskine, our women’s soccer team decided to be individually responsible for establishing and executing a project for a needy soccer organization. SIFE is a non-profit organization in over 40 countries made up of 400+ collegiate teams to provide support to the local, national, and international communities.

When deciding about a project, I went to my soccer coach, Gary Winchester, who suggested I contact Paul Banta. Coach Winchester is on the coaching staff at Paul’s summer team camps and mentioned Global Soccer Ministries. Through emails with Paul, we discussed the best way for me and the Erskine SIFE team to help out.

Over the past five months, we have collected all kinds of gear from soccer balls, cleats, clothing, and even bags! We got the community involved, which includes the men and women’s soccer team, club soccer teams, and also individuals. Brochures were made to give to these people to educate them about GSM, SIFE, and also explain how much their donation really means to kids in these third world countries. In the brochure, we gave a brief overview of each countries economy and compared their conditions to our economy in the U.S.

Our over all goals were to collect as much gear as possible for GSM. We hope this helps them continue their soccer outreach ministry, coaching and player educating in these countries. Another goal is to get the word out about GSM to as many people as possible. Through educating our community through our brochures, our aim is to form partnerships that will continue to donate to GSM.

In the next few weeks we have decide to ship off all the gear we have collected to another university team from the University of Georgia-Athens, who we help us bring the gear down with them when they take their annual trip to help GSM in Guatemala.
