Lawson Sampson-Sports Quest West Africa Director
Lawson suffered terribly as an orphan while growing up in Nigeria, at times death seemed better than life. However, God in His infinite mercy sustained him and kept him alive because His purpose for bringing him into the world was not yet accomplished. In 1990, Lawson placed his trust in Christ but was not ready to give up the ambitions he had for his own life. In 1998, as a professional soccer player and businessman, Lawson’s talents took him to Eastern Europe. It was during this time that his business and the dream of a long and prosperous soccer career ended. The Lord led Lawson to Kishinev Bible Church in Moldova where Lawson began to surrender his ambitions for a deep trust in God’s plan for His life. The pastor invited Lawson to attend a local Bible study and from that point on, he has never looked back. Lawson returned to Nigeria in 2000 and founded Crossway Evangelical Ministries Worldwide and Generational Sports International. Lawson now serves full-time with Sport Quest ministering throughout West Africa on the soccer field and in churches and bringing community transformation through sport. Lawson has a beautiful wife, Joy, and six children – Jennifer, Samuel, Overcomer, Faith, Love, and Davida.
The following is being presented to the Lagos State FA and the Lagos State Sports Commission in expecting the Lagos State Football Coaches Association for Football Educational Training. GSM International coaches training will begin in September 0f 2017. Two separate advanced courses will be provided and delivered by Paul J Banta – USSF A Nationally Licensed Coaching Instructor. These courses are a ‘C’ and a ‘B’ Level course. These courses are created by Football Educator, Author, and Speaker, Paul Banta, President of Global Soccer Ministries International. GSM Football Courses and coaching methods have been delivered to 1,000’s overs since 1990. Our courses are always upgraded to provide ‘Modern Coaching Methodology’ to the coaches who attend.
In December of 2017, the GSM International ‘A’ Level 1 and ‘A’ Level 2 courses might be presented. If accepted and enjoyed, we can continue with a four-year plan to include the following:
1. Developing a plan to the Lagos State FA, the Lagos State Sports Commission and the Lagos State Football Coaches Association to develop coaches
2. Create a state (and eventually of national pool) of football coaching instructors (educators of these courses) to deliver state and national coaching licenses
3. Have the CAF adopt these course as part of the NFF football education program.
4. Create in the State of Lagos a National Center of Football Development for coaching education for West Africa. This center would be the national center for developing female and male national youth through future senior players.
A correct and productive way to coach and play the modern game of football needs to be considered for the Nigeria society and your Lagos State, for coaches and players to develop at all ages levels. The introducing of new international standards coaching methods would yield great players rewards for the support and development of the sport of football in Nigeria and through Lagos State FA, the Lagos State Football Coaches Association, and the Lagos State Sports Commission. There is a need to tell the football world in that in the State of Lagos Nigeria and the CAF and beyond us, part of Nigeria and the football and sports industry, has a product worth knowing about and to be ready to move forward and to compete at higher standards.
Football is a sport that can change the hearts of youth and senior male and female players for the State of Lagos Nigeria and be accomplished with a greater purpose in mind for the potential of the future of football. Everyone in the football and sports industry must be willing to use their combined abilities and talents cooperating to create a football nation that will change the present for hope for a better future. The state of Lagos Nigeria can lead the way.
One of the great reconciliations that the State of Lagos could gain is a future hope for their state’s football coaches and players is to be with a holistic football development program within the sporting industry of Nigeria having football a centerpiece for future players to have hope in many ways.
The structure of coaching inside any country must be adequately developed, be replicated again and again, evaluated for better changes for the future and improved continuously and assessed by a local State of Lagos FA. This could be accomplished in many ways. One way is to create a panel of qualified, trained coaches and reporting to the Lagos State Football Associations, which will be in cooperation with the Lagos State Football Coaches Association and the Lagos State Sports Commission. The results from these consistent efforts will yield state, national and international benefits by developing players that can win at higher levels of competition outside Nigeria. The football industry inside the State of Lagos will them have massive potential leading the way for additional growth throughout the other many states in Nigeria.
A comprehensive football development plan should allow for coaches to be educators of the game to better coaching their training sessions with ‘modern methods.’ Coaches must learn a better approach for players match performances do produce elite players.
The modern international player has to be capable of playing the match using their natural talents along with high training to compete nationally and worldwide. Players should not be satisfied with their tradition or past playing efforts. Players can go beyond CAF by quality coaching thus bringing a today’s club players to a new level of professionalism worthy to be marketed in the football industry in the CAF and beyond.
What Should Be Started Point?
Development programs in the modern football need to be created in areas where weaknesses are present. We would suggest a new national coaching organization start off where players are taught the game, i.e., the coach, the teacher of the match. Any organization must have a designed football educational coaching plan that is established to development their countries players in today international game. This plan should provide for many coaches to be trained at various players’ levels. This provides a path of excellent training methods for many coaches as possible. A good cooperative planning sequence provides many avenues for coaches and player development that are in cooperation with clubs, government schools, and the Lagos State FA, the Lagos State Football Associations, the Lagos State Football Coaches Association and the Lagos State Sports Commission. Other football groups and local government leaders with an ambitious for football education programs that work and do football development is now a must also are not to be left out of a clear path of excellence. The Lagos State Football Associations, the Lagos State Football Coaches Association and the Lagos State Sports Commission should want to be the leader of football development through a sound Football Coaches Educational Program for all coaches at all levels of competition. Any football organization dealing with competition, funding and being a resource team must re-consider yearly their role to produce structure provide growth and development for football under their leadership and of course coaching development is massive.
Up-to-date football education courses need to be designed for the female and male youth player through to the senior professional player with an emphasis on what the rest of the world is doing must be sort after and requirements for each active, future younger coaches and non active coaches. The design must also to accommodate female coach’s development as FIFA, and the CAF may be demanding this. There is a huge need for the development of much more the female coaching football in any country where football has been dominated by male coaches. The realization of this may have to be corrected by each State FA in Nigeria lead by the NFF. This is going to be a FIFA requirement and must create a way to recruit women into football organizations not only as leaders at the National and State levels but to create more opportunities for female player development starting with youth players through senior players.
The second thing would be to supervise and evaluate the coach by requiring their standard of knowledge be continuously developed and that their efforts are kept in line with developing players for the match and player success in their society. Evaluation is always hard because it requires additional time.
However, without quality assessment, a systematic football approach will lose its football value. Based on what the State of Lagos FA, the Lagos State Football Associations, the Lagos State Football Coaches Association and the Lagos State Sports Commission wants and what the rest of the world is doing must be considered. A system must be acceptable and suited for the country by using “Modern Methods of Football Development” at various level with course work starting from a D-Level Introduction Course, next a C-Level Course centered around using small side game for youth and senior players, then a B-Level Course center around the Advanced Coaching of 11 vs. 11 and lastly two A Level Course. A Level 1 would focus only on the “Concepts of Attacking Football Systems of Play,” while A Level 2 focuses on the “Concepts of Defending Football” and The Science of Football Fitness in Attach and Defending Football. These entire courses except for the D Level would have approach licensing structures acceptable through the Nigerian FF and the CAF. The D course is seen as an Introductory Course while the C, B, A 1 and A 2 are Advance Football Educational Courses. There would also be a D Goalkeeper Course and a Level 2 and Level 3 Advanced Goalkeeper Courses.
The invested efforts of football leadership within the Lagos FA should view this as vital to the future of Lagos State. Developing coaches and players should never regress, and the country will be able to compete with the world outside the borders of Nigeria.
All this can be done by a system of supervised and trained selected pool of local and state, national level coaching staff, who have taken coaching courses and have been mentored along as experts in their field.
With consideration for the development, a suitable coaching course structure is needed. GSM International would like to share their concepts about football education with the State of Lagos and their FA. The starting place is a new football coaching structure to be put in place. We already have this in our coaching course. We have in this document the outline of our Advanced Level ‘C’ course. We have provided a link to our website to view ‘B,’ ‘A’ Level 1 and ‘A’ Level 2. The course work is 200 plus of football education. We have also outlined a potential football education program.
We must remember that the game was made for the players and not for the coach. It is always what the well-educated coach can bring to the players that will allow for a better football industry. Our coaching education program does this. We not only teach the modern game but we teach the coach how to be a leader and mentor of their players. Our program is holistic and brings more than football to the player who in today’s world and the modern game is a necessity.
We can help the structure of coaching education for your State FA with two formations. The first being the national level courses from youth through the professional player and theses courses can be available to all levels of coaches. This might take 3 years development commitment to the number of coaches you with and to also develop a pool, over theses times, of selected coaches who will continue the process throughout Nigeria Once these levels of courses would be obtained then, your FA can see they wish to develop with GSM International a ‘Master Coaching Course Level.’ This would be accessible to a selected group of coaches after completing at levels suggested. This course would be developed base on the further needs of the country to develop international players at all levels. This course will be the highest level of coaches to improve the future of the national federation and state football associations. The second part of this development will be to have the pool of national coaches with our assistance to help provide a refresher, upgrades of football education or specialty courses for the coach in suggesting areas of coaching. This can be planned based on the needs of the country. Such course could be football fitness, goalkeeping, leadership and holistic coaching, new ideas in coaching tactics in attacking systems or new ideas in defending.
